Description The Second Decade Society, an association of Hopkins alumni, along with the Walsh family, created the Meg Walsh Leadership Award to honor a fellow alumna and to encourage a culture of adventure at Hopkins. The award is reserved for seniors in Arts and Sciences and provides funding for a year of creative international travel, following a serious project independent of an academic institution. The project should explore the student's interests and abilities, test their knowledge and assumptions in an international context, and develop their leadership skills. SDS expects a final product, such as a paper, film, portfolio or report. Recipients will share their experiences during their year and when they return. The criteria for selection are: demonstrated leadership that has a lasting impact on Hopkins and the community, strength of the proposed project, and record of academic achievement.

Special Tips 1. The proposal should be creative but focused and feasible. Projects may involve research, public service, creation of literature or music, internships, film making, etc. — or any combination of these.
2. The leadership essay does not require you to have held a top post or found an organization, only serious and lasting involvement and achievement.
