Description The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902 to bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. Selection committees seek candidates of exceptional academic and personal merit, whose qualities promise service to the world and to their chosen fields in the decades ahead. Rhodes Scholars are serious and successful students who wish to pursue a focused course of study at Oxford in any field, including engineering and the sciences. Successful applicants also have records of accomplishment and leadership outside the class, such as in sports, public service, and/or student activities.
