Financing The award funds tuition and room for the scholar, in addition to a stipend of $11,000 to cover other expenses during the course of study. The stipend is paid in 2 equal parts to the scholar. The U.S.-Ireland Alliance will assist scholars with their traveling expenses to and from Ireland. An additional 750 Irish pounds will be provided by Ireland's leading travel service to encourage travel within Ireland and Europe.

Description The goal of the Mitchell scholarship is to introduce the next generation of American leaders to Ireland by supporting graduate study in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Scholars may take advantage of many educational and social opportunities offered to them during their stay by members and friends of the U.S.-Ireland Alliance. Applicants must have a record of intellectual distinction, leadership and extracurricular activity, as well as personal characteristics of honesty, integrity, fairness, and unselfish service to others. Mitchell Scholars may study in any field, provided the proposed university supports such study and the applicant is sufficiently prepared. Twelve scholarships are usually awarded each year.
