Romance Languages
Major only

In this major, students have their choice of learning Romance Languages: French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. All faculty members are native speakers who teach literary theory and criticism, and teaching methods are constantly updated, and include the latest technological tools (language laboratory, Internet, etc.). The goal of the Romance Languages major is to provide students with a strong set of reading, writing, and speaking skills in their chosen languages. From that solid base, students then move on to studying the literature, history, and culture of France, Spain, Latin America, and Italy through works in their original languages.

Highlights of the Hopkins Program
The department offers two possible tracks for a major in Romance languages: a dual-language option or a three-language option, each requiring a minimum of eight upper level courses. The dual-language option requires four upper level courses in two languages; the three-language option requires three upper level courses in two languages, and two upper level courses. Every language and literature program at Hopkins is a small, intimate program that manages to accommodate students with varying levels of language proficiency and different interests. All the courses are taught entirely in the target language, for the benefit of students. The department has approved programs of study in Madrid, Spain, and Paris, France. Courses of study are also acceptable through the study abroad programs offered by the Program in Latin American Studies.
