Mathematics Mathematics is more than the fundamental language and underlying analytical structure of science and technology. It is a formal way of thinking—an art that ties together the abstract structure of reason and the formal development of the logic that defines the scientific method. From the study of just how arguments and theories are formed in language and technology, to the framework of quantitative and qualitative models of the natural and social sciences, Mathematics is based upon the development of precise expressions, logical arguments, and the search for and exposure of pattern and structure. Highlights of the Hopkins Program From our Future Scholars Program, promoting higher education in mathematics to advanced high school students in the Baltimore area, through our award winning research faculty, through world-wide collaborations with research organizations like the Japanese American Mathematical Institute (JAMI), to one of the oldest running research mathematics journals in the Western Hemisphere, the American Journal of Mathematics, the Department of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University is dedicated to the education of mathematics and the mathematical sciences to undergraduates, graduate students and researchers alike. Our focus is to create and maintain a vibrant scientific environment, specializing in the mathematical fields of analysis, partial differential equations, algebraic/complex/differential geometry, mathematical physics, number theory, and topology.
