Latin American Studies
Major and Minor
This academic discipline is a study of the
complexity of Latin American social, political, and cultural structures,
issues, and problems. Students study the effects of disease, law, and
colonization, as well as the different forms of government, development,
foreign policy, and socio-cultural aspects of Latin America. As a result
of completing the major or minor, students will have a deeper understanding
of Latin American politics, economy, and culture, as well as of the
intricate relationship between the region and the U.S.
Highlights of the Hopkins Program
The Program in Latin American Studies at The Johns Hopkins University
offers a variety of courses across the disciplines and promotes research
partnerships between students and faculty. Under the close supervision
of an adviser, students create an individualized program of study that
focuses on a particular aspect of Latin America, or the history, literature,
ecology, geography, and politics of a particular region within Latin
America. Courses draw on the expertise of professors in Romance languages,
anthropology, history, sociology, and political science. Intermediate
level proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese is required for the
bachelor’s degree, and the program offers opportunities for research
and travel to Latin America.
