Majors and Minors list)
French
Major only
The major in French literature requires a thorough
knowledge of the language, and is a study of various forms of literature,
culture, films, and music. Many great philosophical and political thinkers,
poets, and novelists have written in French, and studying authors such
as Rimbaud, Moliere, Proust, and Rousseau in their original language
adds much more to the texts. The French major also incorporates the
study of contemporary music and film as well as current events, politics,
and cultural studies.
Highlights of the Hopkins Program
The French department at Hopkins allows students to build a solid core
of French knowledge, and then choose what subjects they would like
to investigate further. Students may choose from French literature
along many themes and authors; political or philosophical, fictional
or historical. There are also options to study contemporary French
culture, French films, phonetics, or business French. Additionally,
students are encouraged to study abroad, either through the exchange
program with Sciences Po, or through another approved program of their
choice.
