Chemistry
Major only

Chemistry is the study of what the world is made of: the gases that make up the atmosphere, the rocks that make up the mountains, the water that makes up the lakes and rivers and, most important, all of the molecules that make up you. The centerpiece of chemistry is the periodic table, which arranges the 100-or-so natural elements into families with similar reactivities. The goal of chemistry is to understand how atoms react with one another to form molecules and to use this understanding to make new molecules with exciting biological and electronic properties. Chemistry uses ideas from quantum mechanics (molecules behave as standing waves with set, discrete geometries) and thermodynamics (chemical reactions are a balance between maximizing entropy and minimizing energy) to understand the properties of molecules.

Highlights of the Hopkins Program
Chemistry at Johns Hopkins focuses on three cutting-edge areas of research: the development of new synthetic approaches and the application of modern chemical methods to biological problems, the study of physical properties of molecules such as adsorption and clustering, and the use of new computational techniques to understand molecular behavior. The Department has strong programs in both undergraduate and graduate training with an emphasis on independent research at all levels of instruction.
